Executive
Board Notes
With Dave Richardson of the BSA National
Relationships Division as our host, the NLAS Executive Board met at the
new Boy Scouts of America Museum in Irving Texas on
Saturday March 15, 2003
.
This is an excellent facility, which gives an extensive overview of the
history of the Boy Scout movement in the
United States
from its inception in 1910 to the present.
I strongly encourage all Scouters and their families to tour this
facility any time you are in the
Dallas
,
TX
area. You will find this to
be time well spent and will come away with a new appreciation of the
effort that has been made in the past to provide all Scouts and Scouters
with the program, facilities and support which we enjoy today.
A major portion of the actual board meeting focused on sharing the
elements of youth protection developed by the Boy Scouts of America with
all non-Scouting activities in our communities, especially as it relates
to schools, churches and other youth programs.
Four types of abuse were identified: Emotional Abuse, Physical
Abuse, Sexual Abuse, and Neglect.
The materials provided for help in sharing this message include three
videos, which should be available in every Boy Scout Council office.
“A Time to Tell” for Cub Scout age youth, “It Happened to
Me” for Boy Scout age youth, and a newly released “Personal Safety
Awareness” (AV No. 09V027) for Exploring and Venturing age young
people.
In addition to the videos, there are two new comic book type pieces that
have been developed for Cub Scout age children.
One of these is titled “Power Pack Pals” BSA Supply No.
33980, and the other is titled “Power Pack Pals, Be Safe on the
Internet” BSA Supply No. 33981. If
these are not available in your Boy Scout Council office you can obtain
them by contacting the Relationships Division at the National Boy Scout
office.
Additional sources of information are available through the
national Boy Scouts web site, www.scouting.org
(Site Map) Youth Protection and Adult Leadership, Guide to Safe
Scouting.
In addition to the above discussion, NLAS President-Elect Tom Wilson
shared a presentation he made to his church council titled “Why should
my church look at its Boy Scout Troop and it’s Cub Scout Pack as
integral to our youth ministry?” Although
his church doesn’t have a Venture Crew, the material in this
presentation would apply equally to this portion of youth ministry.
Two other areas of
discussion focused on NLAS membership and the selection of officers for
the association. The area of
membership focused on two points, are we serving our current members in
the best way possible and what can we do to attract and retain new
members of the association. The
appropriate selection of officers to lead the association is always
necessary to insure that the association has effective leadership at all
times.

RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS

Also, during this
period eighteen Boy Scout Leaders have been recognized with the Lamb
Award and fifteen Boy Scout leaders have been presented the Servant of
Youth Award. This compare to
ten Lamb Awards and four Servant of Youth Awards presented in 2001.
For those of you who serve as the Central Region service team, the
September through December 2002 reports of religious emblems earned and
adult recognitions presented are included with this mailing.
Be sure to congratulate each recipient of an award and especially
encourage the youth to continue in their commitment to the Lutheran
faith and the principles of Scouting.
Much of the increase in
God and Church and God and Life emblems earned by Boy Scouts appears to
be a direct result of contacts made with Boy Scouts and Venturers at the
2001 National Boy Scout Jamboree.
PRAY reports that the
revised curricula for the God and Me and the God and Family programs are
being well received and that work is progressing on revising the God and
Church program. No target
date for the release of this new material has been set at present.
